Congress does not believe in any confrontation with the new Narendra Modi government and will function as a "constructive" opposition, former Union minister, K V Thomas said here today.

"We will work as constructive opposition in the Lok Sabha and will not create a situation where even question hour was disrupted as during the previous tenure," he said.

"Congress has decided to give constructive support. We will cooperate with the government and will function as a watchdog," Thomas, who was elected to the Lok Sabha for a fifth term from Ernakulam constituency told reporters at a Meet-The-Press Programme organised by the Press Club here.

Crores of rupees are being spent on the swearing-in of the Prime Minister designate, he said.

"After A B Vajpayaee's swearing-in, crores are being spent now on swearing-in of Narendra Modi," Thomas said.

Pointing out that UPA I and II had done good work like bringing in RTI, Food security Act, he said "some mistakes have happened. Victory and defeat is common in an election".

To another question, he said "we have got leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Vadra should take an active role in the Congress".
