State Congress workers today gheraoed the residence of Punjab education minister Sikandar Singh Maluka to protest against an alleged scam in the purchase of study material for schools at exorbitant prices.

Demanding immediate sacking of the minister, Congress workers, led by former MLA and state Congress vice-president Rana KP Singh, raised slogans against Maluka and the SAD-BJP government at the protest in Kansal village.

Congress leaders demanded a CBI probe into the allegations over purchase of school texts and flayed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for shielding the minister.

The probe ordered by the CM into the issue by Justice (retd) AK Jindal was a sham, KP Singh alleged.

"What Maluka has done is not only a financial scam, it is also an immoral act," a release here quoted KP Singh as saying.
