Congress activists here today held a protest after the wife of a local party leader was allegedly taken into custody by police.
Congress activists, led by Qadian MLA and the wife of the party's state president, Charanjeet Kaur Bajwa, protested against the alleged high-handed of the police after they picked up one Daljit Kaur, wife of a Congress district leader, in the afternoon following a raid at a chemist's.
SSP (Batala), Surinderjeet Singh Mand, said that a joint team of health and police officials had raided the chemist's shop as part of a crackdown against sale of drugs without prescription.

As the news spread of the woman having been taken to the police station, hundreds of Congress workers gathered to protest against the move with the Qadian MLA alleging that police was working under pressure from the ruling SAD-BJP alliance in the state.
SDM (Batala), JS Grewal, who happened to be in the area, rushed to the spot to pacify the Congress workers and ordered Daljit Kaur's release.
Congress workers also held a protest at the main chowk demanding action against DSP, Harisharan Sharma, but agreed to disperse after the DSP turned up at the spot and expressed his regret over the incident.
Sharma denied that police had taken Daljit Kaur into custody, saying they had just asked her to vacate the shop as health officials had to carry out a search there.
However, the woman called her supporters and tried to give the matter a political colour, Sharma added.
