Terming the government's decision as 'arbitrary', party workers held demonstration at the local Powercom office and burnt effigies of the state government.
"The hike in power tariff is not justified as common man is already feeling the pinch of inflation due to wrong policies of the state government," former MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa said.
He strongly condemned the decision, saying the hike would add to the woes of people.
Former deputy speaker of Punjab Assembly professor Darbari Lal also criticised the state government for failing to ensure regular electric supply in the state, especially for industrial units.
He said erratic power supply and hefty tariffs have forced industries from Punjab to shift to neighbouring states.
