The Kopri police in Thane city have launched manhunt for an unidentified man who relieved a person of his gold ornaments worth Rs 88,000.

According to police, on Monday evening, Ankush Sakharam Malusare, Chandrakant Chavan and Tanaji Kave were sitting on the steps of Waghjai temple in Kopri.

A man approached them and asked if they were the trustees of the temple, adding that he wanted to donate some gold.

Kave and others asked him to drop the offering in the donation box.

The man asked Kave to go into sanctum sanctorum of the temple with him. As the two went in, he said since Kave was caretaker of the temple, the gold that he was donating should be "blessed" with the gold Kave was wearing, and asked him to take off his chain and ring.

Afterwards the both walked out. Later Kave realised that his gold ornaments were missing.

Kopri police have registered a case of cheating.
