Connectivity in the north eastern region will increase in the coming month as Alliance Air, which operates flights in the area, is likely to induct a second aircraft, Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh said here today.

"A second aircraft is expected to be inducted by Alliance Air and once this is done, the other unconnected airports in the region can be connected by air in the coming months," Singh told the concluding session of the 63rd plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) here.

An MoU has already been signed for a period of two years between NEC and Alliance Air to provide connectivity to unconnected areas by air wherein the former provides viability gap funding to the agency, he said.

Acknowledging that connectivity has always been an issue for the north eastern region, Singh said NEC had been able to restore Alliance Air flights to Umroi, Lilabari, Silchar and Tezpur Airports providing air connectivity to Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

For strengthening of air connectivity in the region, the NEC has been trying to promote a dedicated low-cost airline for the region, he said.
