Justices K N Basha and K Ravichandra Babu gave the interim direction on a petition by M K Muzibur Rahman, Secretary of Umar Nagar Muslim Jamath at Kooriyur in Ramanathapuram district.

The petitioner said that these persons had not been issued any community certificate despite converting to Islam three decades ago.

Citing instances of two persons, he said delay in determination of community status of the converts from SC to Muslim community had affected them.

Rahman said no action had so far been taken despite representations to determine and declare the community status of converts.

Non-determination of community status of converts and non issue of community certificate had affected children, who could not get admission in schools, he said.

The petitioner had pleaded for a direction to TNPSC Chairman to consider these SC candidates under Backward Class (Muslim) category and for a directive to Tamil Nadu Backward classes Commission to submit a report on the community status of the converts from other communities to Islam.
