Considerable progress in medical research, says minister

Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the health department made considerable success in medical research and treatment of various diseases.

The Union Health and Family Welfare minister also spoke about the various steps taken by the government for healthcare and progress made by the health department in the diagnosis of diseases.

He was addressing a seminar on 'Development and nurturing of emerging interface between medical science and biotechnology' at the Gauhati University.

Health scientists of the country developed medical treatment methods for both infectious and non-infectious diseases which do not have known procedures, Azad said.

The government has also set up specialised 42 testing centres across the country, he said.
 

In view of the high incidence of cancer in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram, Azad said that special measures had been taken by the government against the disease.

The government was also taking steps to bring down the infant and maternal mortality rates, the minister said, adding that emphasis was being laid on increasing the number of medical facilities and health care research.
