A 29-year-old police constable was allegedly abused and attacked on the premises of a local court by an undertrial prisoner and his mother, a senior officer said today.

The constable, Bhavesh Ramesh Meher was part of a squad escorting about a dozen prisoners from Thane Central Jail to the court.

"The alleged incident occurred outside the court of district judge V K Shewale last afternoon when the undertrial prisoner Etsham Iqubal Shaikh was being given a cigarette by his mother Zakira, which Meher objected to," said senior inspector DP Boraste of Thane Nagar police station.

The officer said that Shaikh and his mother got annoyed and abused Meher before threatening him. "Shaikh allegedly threw a water bottle at Meher," said Boraste.

Police have registered an FIR against the duo under various sections of IPC for assaulting or using force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty and for breach of peace, he said, adding that Shaikh's mother has not been arrested yet.
