A police constable who conspired to kill his wife in order to pocket the insurance money and his hired accomplice have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court.

Special Judge R K Gupta yesterday convicted Special Armed Force (SAF) constable Lovkesh Rajput (34) and Raju alias Rajshri (45) under IPC section 302 (murder) and sentenced them to life imprisonment for killing Rajput's wife.

The court also slapped a fine Rs 7,000 each on them while acquitting one more accused in the case due to lack sufficient evidence.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) N K Mandloi told reporters here today that the constable hatched a conspiracy to kill his wife Jayanti (32) for insurance money and had hired two persons for the task.

"On January 19, 2012, Rajput and his wife were returning home late night when two unidentified persons attacked them near Polo Ground area. While Rajput sustained injury in legs, Jayanti suffered serious wounds on her head and limbs. She succumbed to her injuries in a hospital after five days," Mandloi said.

A case of murder and loot was registered against the two persons on basis of the complaint lodged by Rajput, he said, adding the constable had insured his wife just one month before she was killed.

After Jayanti's death, Rajput claimed the insurance amount from the insurance company, which in turn asked for the closure report of the case, Mandloi said.

After nearly one year of the incident, Rajput and Raju had a tiff over sharing the insurance money that came to the knowledge of police through their sources and they grilled the duo again.

During the interrogation, Rajput admitted of hatching a conspiracy to kill his wife for insurance money, the APP said.
