A constable and a home guard jawan were attacked with chilli powder and stones in southwest Delhi's Bindapur area after they stopped a group of "suspicious-looking" men.

The incident took place around 3.45 AM yesterday when constable Pawan and home guard jawan Laxmi Narayan were on night patrol on Arya Samaj road.

The area houses a market and there have been complaints about thefts in some shops. Following such complaints of thefts, DCP (Southwest) Surender Kumar has ordered his staff to patrol the area in the night.

While Pawan and Narayan were patrolling the area, they spotted four-five men coming towards them and asked them to sit near a shop, said a senior police officer.

Suspecting their activites, Pawan tried to make a call to ask for extra personnel, following which chilli powder was thrown in his eyes and a stone was hurled at Narayan, who was standing at some distance, said the officer.

Pawan fired two rounds in the air.

The accused managed to flee, said the officer.

A case under sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC has been registered against unknown persons at Bindapur police station.

"The accused persons have been identified and they will be nabbed soon," said the DCP.
