Congress MP Sanjay Singh today expressed regret over the death of a police constable, killed yesterday in a clash here between the alleged supporters of his son Anant Vikram Singh and police.

"It was very tragic that a constable lost his life yesterday. Really I am very sorry and will feel uneasy for ever for this ill-fated incident," the former Union minister and Rajya Sabha MP told reporters here.

Singh along with his second wife Amita Singh was addressing mediapersons in the premises of the Bhupati Bhawan palace at Ramnagar here after the controversy related to his family erupted.

He said both Anant Vikram Singh and Garima Singh(his first wife) misled the innocent people of Ramnagar and made their unfair use and thus playing with the time and emotions of the people.

At least 18 persons were detained after constable Vijay Mishra (45) was killed and six persons were injured in a clash between the alleged supporters of Anant Vikram Singh and police yesterday.

According to police, the clash took place as Anant Vikram's supporters gathered outside 'Bhoopati Bhawan', the Singhs' ancestral house here, after hearing that the Congress MP and his wife Amita were to arrive in Amethi.

Anant Vikram occupies the residence with his mother and Sanjay Singh's first wife, Garima.

Sanjay Singh and his second wife Amita are locked in a dispute over the ancestral house with Anant Vikram and Garima.

Additional Superintendent of Police Munnalal said the constable, who was posted at Amethi police station, died after sustaining a bullet injury in firing by the irate group.

Police had to resort to a lathicharge and fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to control the mob, Munnalal added.
