A head constable of Tamil Nadu Police, who avenged the murder of his mother by killing one of the accused persons, has been awarded life imprisonment by a special court here.

R Murugan had killed Dhanasekharan and injured Semon, accused in the murder of his mother, in police custody in 2009 while they were being escorted to court from the prison.

Additional Sessions Judge Tiruvallur convicted him under section 302 (murder) of IPC and sentenced him to undergo life imprisonment with fine of Rs 20,000.

"CBI had registered a case on the orders dated April 23, 2010 of Madras High Court. It was alleged that on July 09, 2009, accused Dhanasekharan and Semon along with few other accused were being escorted from Central Prison, Puzhal to JM Court, Thiruthani for extension of remand," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said in a statement.

She said Dhanasekharan and Semon were involved in the murder of Muniammal, mother of R. Murugan on September 5, 2008.

"Murugan was waiting for an opportunity to take revenge on the killers of his mother. He suddenly opened fire from his service rifle at Dhanasekharan and Semon when the police vehicle carrying them was on the move, killing Dhanasekharan instantly and injuring Semon," she said.
