Construction projects are suffering as environment departments of states are reluctant in giving clearances for acquiring sand, the Military Engineer Service (MES) Builders' Association said today.

At a convention held here, the association asked Congress General Secretary and MP Ajay Maken to help them find a solution to the problem faced due to scarcity of sand.

Noting that difficulty in acquiring sand for construction was a problem from which not only the builders of MES are suffering but also those from other organisations, Maken assured them that he would make efforts in this regard.

Maken said it was to be seen "if we can go back to the Supreme Court or not" on the issue of sand mining.

"And secondly we should take up with the state governments, particularly the environment departments of the state government to issue earlier environment clearances so that delays don't happen in the future," he said.

He asked the builders' association to write a letter to him on the issues they faced so that he can with the defence ministry.
