Container vessel sinking off Lakshadweep

A Maldivian container vessel with 22 crew members, including four Indians, has started sinking near the Lakshadweep coast after being hit by engine snag and rescue operations are underway, Coast Guard sources said today.

The Male-bound vessel 'M V Asian Express' coming from Mohamed Bin Qasim Port in Pakistan had developed some engine problem last evening. This morning it started sinking, the sources told PTI.

The ship has a crew of 18 Maldivians and four Indians and of them at least four have been rescued so far, the sources said.

Coast Guard vessel 'Varuna' is engaged in the rescue operations.
