Days after the Madras High court saw acrimonious scenes involving lawyers, prompting the HC to ask for its security to be given to CISF or similar force, Justice C S Karnan has written to the Chief Secretary, saying he was happy with the performance of the police personnel.

In a letter, copies of which were given to the press, he said he was satisfied with the performance of state police personnel deployed in the HC and that there was "absolutely no lack of service nor any lapse or shortcomings as reported in some quarters."

"In my opinion, the Tamil Nadu police establishment, who are always alert, should be given the freedom to carry on without criticism or adverse remarks which may only demoralize the force and could put our own safety in jeopardy."

The High Court had suggested security cover by a central agency such as Central Industrial Security Force in the backdrop of ruckus created by a group of lawyers demanding Tamil as the court language on September 14.

Following this, the state government informed the court that the principal bench here and the Madurai Bench campus had been declared 'high security zone' but the government opposed CISF cover.
