"During the year gone by, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has made every effort to maintain public order and peace to the satisfaction of the people of the state and to instill a sense of security among them," Prasad said here in his New Year message.

The Director General of Police, however, added: "Our best efforts notwithstanding, we have to continue to strive areas where we could have done better."

Elaborating on its achievements, the DGP said the J&K police had achieved to become one of the finest counter insurgency force in the world and the country and now their focus was to achieve sustained peace in the region.

"A sense of security has prevailed which was reflected in the arrival of a record number of more than 13 lakh tourists and 6.21 lakh Amarnath pilgrims during the year, boosting economy in the region," he said.

Apart from its multi dimensional duties, Prasad said the force's CID wing had carried out more than 90,000 verifications this year helping locals, including Haj pilgrims and students travelling abroad, to get their passports and other services cleared within a short time.

Improvements have been made in the procedures to ensure quick disposal of verifications and to avoid unwarranted trouble to the people, Prasad said.

He said that the organisation was continuing on its efforts to strengthen its image among the masses.

"In year 2012, free medical camps were held in various pockets of the state, besides providing assistance to orphanages and NGOs for under privileged and physically challenged people," he said.
