Railway authorities have imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on a contractor for allegedly storing water bottles and cold drinks in the toilet of the Garib Rath Express.
The action was initiated after a video purportedly showing the storage of catering items in the train toilet went viral on the social media.
"The Railways took a serious view of the storage of water bottles, cold drinks etc. on April 26 (in train toilet of the Garib Rath Express) and the matter was viewed very seriously," a railway official said.
A fine of Rs 1 lakh has been imposed on the contractor Krishna Enterprises after Western Railway took up the issue immediately with the IRCTC, besides taking other remedial actions, an official release said.
"This action follows a viral video of catering staff using the toilet of Divyang coach of Garib Rath Train no 12909 Bandra-Nizamuddin Express for storing water bottles, cold drinks etc," it said.
In a statement, Ravinder Bhakar, Chief Public Relations Officer (Western Railway) said besides levying a hefty fine, a show cause notice has also been served to the contractor of the train for termination of the contract by the IRCTC.

A team has also been deputed to check and verify the activities and operations of catering service in Bandra Terminus-Nizamuddin Garib Rath Express as a follow up action, he said.
"A vigil is being kept at various levels to ensure that such incident don't recur. A five-day drive has been launched to check pantry/mini pantry in all trains to review, report and rectify deficiencies regarding catering services," he said.
