A contractor of a sewage pumping station here has been fined Rs 9 lakhs for dereliction of duty after the authorities detected direct discharge of drain water into Yamuna, officials said today.
Three 'safai karamcharis' have also been suspended for their failure to run the sewage treatment plant properly, they said.
"Three safai karmacharis, including safai naik, have been suspended for failing to maintain the sewage treatment plant (STP). Sewage pumping station (STP) contractor was fined Rs 9 lakhs for not running the plant properly," Ravindra Kumar, Nodal officer, Yamuna Karya Yojna said.

Acting on a complaint by Gopeshwar Nath Chaturvedi, Kumar visited the Bengali Ghat, Swami Ghat area etc, and found direct discharge of drain water into Yamuna.
"Since the very purpose of preventing Yamuna from pollution was being defeated as drain water was directly discharged into the river, an order to stop further payment to the contractor has been issued," he said, adding even street drains were not been properly cleaned.
The ADM said the three safai karamcharis were missing from work when he visited the plant.
