Alleging slipshod work by contractors assigned with removal of garbage here resulting in pile-up on streets, Puducherry unit of BJP today urged Chief Minister N Rangasamy to ensure proper monitoring by officials.

Unit General Secretary R V Swaminathan in a release here claimed most of the contractors enjoyed the support of the political bigwigs and hence were carrying out their work in a slipshod manner leaving the garbage on the streets for days together.

There were also incidents of these contractors using violent practices against officers questioning their irregular work, he alleged.

Around Rs 2,500 was being paid every day to a lorry assigned with the work of removal of garbage. But the work was not done regularly.

A close monitoring of the work should be done by officials, who should also be assured of security to discharge their duties, Swaminathan said.
