The conversion of railway track from narrow gauge to broad gauge from Badarpur in Assam to Agartala would be completed by March 2016, Union Minister for DoNER Jitendra Singh today said.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the country cannot develop without the development of North-East. So we are laying much stress on the completion of projects in the region," Singh told reporters here.

"This will be of huge importance to us because this will convert and develop Agartala into a major railway junction and help in expanding the network in the region not only within Tripura but also outside Tripura.

"... We will also be able to plan further rail connectivity with the neighbouring countries particularly Bangladesh," he said.

The DoNER minister said, "We have also got in touch with the shipping ministry for the waterways. There are already 16 approved waterways for the northeast from Brahmaputra down to the Bay of Bengal.

"How best can that be used to the advantage of Tripura will also be worked out and partly that will also require the involvement of the Ministry of External Affairs because of the water borders that we have.
