Cop beaten by mob during idol immersion; suspended

An irate mob beat up a police official during Durga idol immersion in Jehagirabad police station area here and the cop was later suspended for failing to control the situation.

Additional Superintendent of Police O P Singh said when a procession started moving for immersion of the Durga idol in Nainamau village here last night, there was a prayer meeting happening at a religious place and some people there objected to the procession.

The mob got angry when Station Officer Shujauddin beat up a youth in the procession while instructing him to move fast and beat him up, he said.
 

On getting information, senior officials rushed to the spot and pacified the mob and controlled the situation, he said.

After an inquiry into the incident, the Station Officer was suspended for failing to assess the situation and controlling it, the ASP said.

The immersion was carried out peacefully, he added.
