A special court today awarded three years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 today on a constable for accepting a bribe.

The sentence was awarded by Special Judge D N Mishra to constable Ajay Singh Pawar under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to the prosecution, Pawar was found guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000 in two instalments from an accused Ravi Bairagi in a criminal case registered against him in the Chandan Nagar police station.

Pawar had threatened Bairagi that if he did not pay him a bribe of Rs 5,000 then he would frame him in an Arms Act case and ensure that he would not get bail.

After the threat, Bairagi paid Pawar Rs 1,000 initially and later tipped off Lokayukta sleuths who laid a trap and caught Pawar red-handed while accepting Rs 3,000, the second instalment of the bribe, near the district hospital.
