A policeman has been seriously injured after being stabbed allegedly by a youth in the compound of Town Police Station in Dumka district of Jharkhand, a senior police officer said today.

The youth, Rohit Sharma, was fleeing from the police station when Havildar Sallauddin Ansari tried to overpower him yesterday and was stabbed, Deputy Superintendent of Police Pitambar Singh Kherwar said.

Sallauddin was taken to a hospital to neighbouring Bardhaman in West Bengal with the knife still stuck in his stomach as there was no surgeon in Dumka Hospital, Kherwar said.

The seriously injured policeman was then referred to a hospital in Kolkata, he said.

The incident happened when Sharma's elderly parents came to lodge a complaint against him for allegedly torturing them.

Sharma, who too was present, rushed out to avoid arrest when Sallauddin tried to overpower him and the knife attack took place, the police official said.
