Copper prices declined by 0.25 per cent to Rs 407.10 per kg in futures trade today as participants trimmed their bets even as metal strengthened overseas on strong economic data from the world's top consumers China and the US.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper for delivery in far-month April was trading lower by Re one, or 0.25 per cent at Rs 407.10 per kg in a business turnover of nine lots.

Similarly, the metal for delivery in February shed 85 paise, or 0.21 per cent to Rs 404.40 per kg in 855 lots.

Analysts attributed the fall in copper futures to offloading of positions by participants to book profits but a firm trend in base metals overseas, capped the fall.

Globally, the metal dropped as much as 0.13 per cent to USD 5,917 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange (LME).
