Cops arrest 2 robbers after a chase, one more on the run

Policemen today chased and arrested two of three robbers who were fleeing after looting more than Rs 2 lakh from a Western Union branch at Jainamganj in Bazar Shukul area of the district.

Police said three motorbike-borne robbers struck at the Western Union branch at Jainamganj near Mardanpur in Bazar Shukul police station area this afternoon when LIC agent Rubin Ahmed reached there to submit Rs 1 lakh that he had earlier withdrawn from a nearby Bank of Baroda branch.

The gang members overpowered Ahmed and the Western Union branch manager, and fled with more than Rs 2 lakh in cash.
 

On information that the robbers had fled towards Saththin Ghat on Gomati river bank, a police team posted there chased them. With the help of some students from the other side of the river, two of the robbers were arrested.

They have been identified as Raja Singh and Jitendra Singh, both hailing from Sultanpur district, Circle Officer of police of Musafirkhana Sumit Shukla said.

He said the police have seized a portion of the looted money and a country-made pistol from them.

Police have launched a combing operation to nab the third accused, identified as Rahul Singh of Suntanpur, the Circle Officer added.
