The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested a militant of the NSCN (Unification) group and claimed to have foiled the banned outfit's plan to kill a "renowned" person here.

Navdeep Singh Brar, Superintendent of Police of the SIT, said on Saturday that the arrested militant is a close aide of Loliam Latey, the self-styled chairman of Myanmar- based NSCN(U).

"The militant was arrested from Lekhi village in Naharlagun on Friday along with ammunitions," he said.

The SP said that the outfit had hatched a conspiracy to abduct, extort and kill a "renowned" person.

He, however, declined to identify the target person due to security reasons.

"A hand grenade, 13 live ammunitions of various calibers, a mobile handset, a voter ID card and a bus ticket to Dimapur was recovered from the militant's possession," Brar said.

The SP said that a case was booked under the Arms Act and an investigation to nab other accused has been launched.

"The militant was earlier involved in a kidnapping case at Khonsa and was convicted in an extortion case. He was released from jail in January," Brar said.
