Cops get 2-year jail for allowing escape of inmate

A local court has sentenced two police constables to two-year imprisonment for negligently allowing escape of an undertrial prisoner from their custody.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Narendra Kumar awarded the jail term to Bachi Singh and Radhey Shyam under Section 223 (Escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public servant)of IPC and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each.

According to the prosecution, Pramod, who was an accused in several cases including loot and murder, escaped on September 2, 1998 while being escorted by the police constables after a hearing at a Ghaziabad court.

He was later killed in a police encounter.
