Several people were reportedly injured today when police resorted to lathicharge to control the crowd during two separate election rallies -- one of RLD chief Ajit Singh and another of BJP -- in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district.

Chaos prevailed in Singh's rally when party workers jostled to reach the leader, while the crowd got agitated at the BJP rally as its star-attraction Hema Malini failed to turn up.

The first incident took place when Singh arrived in Baghpat. Enthusiastic party workers tried to reach him, forcing police to lathicharge to control them.

More than 12 party workers were injured in the lathicharge, a party leader said. Police, however, claimed that no one was injured in the incident.

The second incident took place in Badaut where a large number of people gathered to hear BJP leader Hema Malini, but lost their cool and started creating ruckus after she failed to turn up after long wait.

Chairs and tents were damaged by the agitated mob. Police had to resort to lathicharge to control them.
