Police seized over eight tonnes of moss agate stones, valued at Rs 33 lakh, being quarried illegally at a village here and arrested five persons, a senior official said today.
"Acting on a tip-off that semi-precious stones were being quarried illegally at Dagadwadi village, police carried out a raid yesterday night and seized 8.33 tonnes of moss agate gemstones. Five persons involved in extracting them were arrested," said Inspector Rajendrasingh Gour of Jalna Police's Crime Branch.
He informed that the person in whose field the stones were being quarried, Rameshwar Kature, has been arrested.
He said that four other people, identified as Shivaji Kature, Jyotiram Mane, Sharad Kadam and Gopichand Kadam have also been arrested in this connection.
"These semi-precious gemstones are sold at around Rs 4 lakh per tonne and is used in jewellery and also in alternative medicine techniques as healing crystals," the official informed.
