Cotton output estimated at 390 lakh bales for 2013-14

The cotton crop for the season 2013-14 (October-September), is estimated at 390 lakh bales (170 kg each) mainly due to rise in yield, the Textile Commissioner said here today.

"For the 2013-14 season, cotton production is estimated to have increased to 390 lakh bales as the total yield have has gone 565.36 kg per hectare from 518.03 kg per hectare," Textile Commissioner Kiran Soni Gupta said.

Cotton production for 2012-13, stood at 365 lakh bales, according to data given by the Cotton Association of India (CAI).

Production is estimated to have significantly go up in Gujarat to 120 lakh bales in 2013-14 season, from 93 lakh bales in the previous year.
 

In Maharashtra too, output is expected to rise to 84 lakh bales in 2013-14, from 79 lakh bales last year.

However, total cotton acreage declined marginally in 2013-14, to 117.27 lakh hectares from 119.78 lakh hectares in the previous year.

Meanwhile, exports rose marginally to 114 lakh bales in 2013-14, from 101.43 lakh bales in 2012-13.
