Arunachal Pradesh Congress today said the Centre's demonetisation move has caused a state of "financial and economic emergency" in the country where the common people were the worst sufferers.
"The people are being harassed unnecessarily in the name of 'surgical strike' against black money and corruption," Arunachal Congress chief Padi Richo said in a statement.
Lashing out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he alleged that the BJP had informed all its "big corporate friends" of the decision beforehand so that they could take care of their black money well before the prime minister announced to demonetise high-value currency notes on November 8.
Criticising the move, Richo said the Centre should have first made currency notes available in advance in all the bank branches in the country with an adequate number of ATMs.
"Patients, daily wage labourers, farmers, vendors, shopkeepers and the indigenous tribal people living in the far-flung areas of the state, having no bank account or banking facility, are going through the toughest time for survival for the last six days," he said.
"Bringing black money back to the country from abroad in 100 days was the first promise made by Modi during his election campaign in 2014. He had also promised that every individual bank account would be credited with Rs 15 lakh after recovering the black money. But, two-and-a-half years have gone by and the people are yet to get the Rs 15 lakh," Richo said.
"Is it not a high drama of Modi to divert the attention of the people after he failed to fulfil his poll promises?" the Congress leader questioned.
