"The country needs leader like Narendra Modi who is clear in his vision and I follow his principles. I wish that Modi unfurled the national flag from Red Fort after next general elections," he said at Swami Vivekanand Yuva Parishad held at Navlakhi compound on Rajmahal Road here.

Modi had earlier addressed the public meeting to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and announced setting up of 14,000 centres to promote sports culture among youths.

Sidhu, known for his riposte and witty one-liners, said the economic condition of the country was in doldrums despite economist prime minister at the helm of affairs.

"Despite three economists -- Manmohan Singh, Montek Singh Ahluwalia and P C Chidambaram -- in the government, the economic condition has been deteriorating each passing day," the former cricketer said.

Earlier, Modi felicitated former Indian captain D K Gaekwad, former Test player Anshuman Gaekwad, wicketkeeper Nayan Mongiya besides players Yusuf Pathan, Munaf Patel and Jacob Martin, the former captain of Baroda Ranji cricket team and other sportspersons.

The chief minister also performed a ground breaking ceremony for the mega multi-story housing projects of Gujarat Housing Board worth Rs 151 crore in the city.
