The police here today arrested an elderly couple for allegedly trying to murder their daughter-in-law.

According to the woman's in-laws, her husband, who is now in the US, had given her 'Talaq' through WhatsApp last month. The woman however denied having received any such message, police said.

The woman said in her complaint at Moghalpura police station that after her marriage with Usman Qureshi in April 2015, he and his parents began to harass her.

Her husband later went to the US for work, but kept harassing her over phone, she said.

Last month she filed a complaint against him and her in-laws under section 498(A) (husband or relatives of husband subjecting a woman to cruelty), said inspector R Devender.

Qureshi's parents claimed that he had given her talaq through WhatsApp and sent divorce documents, but the woman denied this, the police officer said.

The woman filed another complaint yesterday against her father-in-law Mohammed Abdul Hafeez (69) and his 67 years old wife, alleging that they tried to strangle her.

Hafeez also molested her, she alleged, adding that her cousin came to her rescue.

Following the complaint, the police arrested the couple today, the officer said. Further probe is on.
