A couple was booked for allegedly duping a man of Rs 8 lakh on the pretext of sending his brother abroad, police said today.

Narinder Kumar Kalra has been apprehended while his wife Rachna Kalra is yet to be arrested.

A complaint against the couple was filed by Joginderpal, a resident of Subhash Nagar area, alleging that they had told him that Rachna's brother lived in the USA and that they would help his brother Surinderpal to go to that country if an amount of Rs 16 lakh was given to them.

The deal was finally struck at Rs 9 lakh, which was given in two instalments along with passport in July 2011, the complainant has claimed.

The couple, who were Joginderpal's neighbours, promised to send Surinderpal abroad in a month but failed to do. They returned Rs one lakh and passport but did not return the rest of the amount, according to the complaint.

After an enquiry, the police registered a case against the couple under Section 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC.
