Driven by penury, a cycle mechanic along with his wife and two sons allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into a river here, police said today.

The man and his wife died while his two sons were rescued.

Rakesh (45), took his wife Usha and two sons Shubham and Rahul to the Ganga barrage on the pretext of bathing yesterday. Rakesh then dragged his wife and two sons into the swift water current and attempted to drown them with him self.

The bystanders jumped into the river to rescue them but by the time they were taken out, Rakesh was already dead, while Usha breathed her last in the district hospital, police said, adding the condition of the two children is stated to be stable.

Rakesh, resident of Chahshiri locality in Bijnor, was depressed for over some time due to financial constraints.
