Ved Prakash and his wife Monica were critically injured when the girl's family members shot both of them at close range in Pataudi town in the district on Thursday, as they were unhappy with the union, police said today.

Both were admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where their condition was stated to be stable, DCP (South) Praveen Mehta said.

The two victims from nearby villages fell in love and eloped last year to get married against the wishes of their family members, the DCP said.

The couple kept in touch with the relatives despite their opposition to the union, he said.

Last week, Monica's relatives persuaded the couple to return home by assuring them that they were no longer angry about the marriage, he said.

On the pretext that they would re-arrange their marriage in a traditional way, Monica's relatives took them to a temple on Thursday, he said.

However, at a secluded spot nearby, Monica's two brothers Raju and Bhola along with other family members shot the couple and dumped them on the spot, assuming that both of them had died, he said.

Monica in her injured state managed to call the police who rescued them, he said.

An FIR under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and Arms Act has been lodged against Monica's family members but no arrest has been made so far, he said.
