A special court today sentenced a 58-year-old man to 12 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for possessing and selling cannabis.

Special Additional Sessions Judge P K Sinha convicted Sunil Sonkar under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

Public Prosecutor Vimal Mishra told reporters that the judge noted that the court would not show any leniency towards the convict who sold drugs to the youth.

Mishra also said that Sonkar's lawyer had pleaded insanity as a defence for his client but the medical board constituted by the court certified that he was mentally fit.

On August 18, 2009, acting on a tip off, excise department had seized 105 kg cannabis from Sonkar.
