A court here has directed the Delhi Police to conduct DNA test of an abandoned toddler and a woman, who claimed to be her mother, to ascertain the child's parentage.

The court said the girl child, who was last year given to a mid-wife to be sold when she was a month old, would continue to be under the custody of an orphanage where she is now residing.

"...Decision relating to her future can only be taken as per law upon the receipt of the DNA fingerprinting report confirming whether the woman, present before the court, was the mother of the minor or not," Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau said.

"In order to confirm and conclusively establish her identity and also the natural parentage of the child, it is necessary that the DNA/Finger Printing Examination of the child and the woman be got conducted.

"I hereby direct the SHO of Police Station, South Rohini, to take necessary steps to get conducted the DNA/Finger Printing Examination of the child and the woman to confirm the parentage of the child," the judge said.

Keeping in view the urgency involved, the court also directed that the DNA test be conducted on "priority basis" and the report be placed before it within two weeks.
