A Delhi court has granted divorce to a woman on the ground of cruelty after it was proved that her husband had married her to fulfil his plan to settle abroad by forcing her to pursue studies there at her parents' expense.
The court allowed the petition of the Delhi-based woman for a divorce saying she has underwent "unbearable" torture and cruelty at the hands of her Punjab-based husband, who had convinced her to marry him to satisfy his greed and that of his family members.
Additional District Judge Sujata Kohli also observed that this is a "common phenomena" in Punjab, where grooms search brides who can fulfil their dream to go abroad.

"This is a common phenomena in 'State of Punjab' where some grooms are in search of brides, who can get them a foothold abroad, somehow at any cost, attracted by the glamour and green pastures, such grooms stoop down to the extent of ruining the life of young innocent brides," the court said.
The woman sought divorce from her class 12 pass and unemployed husband on the grounds of cruelty and desertion.
According to the woman, the purpose behind the marriage was to get dowry from her parents and through her the man wanted to go abroad as he himself was not capable for it either financially or educationally.
She said their marriage was solemnised in February 2010 at Bhatinda in Punjab and she had come in contact with the man through Internet while she was pursuing M Tech from Jaipur.
She said the man had asked her to take admission in some foreign university after completing first year of M Tech and that he was rich and would bear the expenses for her studies and stay there.
