Court issues arrest warrant against Shibaji Panja

A court in North 24 Parganas district today issued a arrest warrant against businessman Shibaji Panja who was arrested on February 21 night on his arrival from Bangladesh where he had gone as a member of a delegation led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Panja, against whom a look-out notice was issued by the Delhi police, was granted bail on Februay 22.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Barrackpore, ordered an immediate issue of an arrest warrant for Panja for failure to appear in the court today, as directed by the court when it had granted bail to Panja on February 22.
 

Panja had been released on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 on February 22 as his counsel claimed before the court that an arrest cannot be made on the basis of a look-out notice for alleged crimes and also a copy of the FIR or the case diary had not been sent by Delhi Police along with the look-out notice, which was mandatory.

Panja is facing charges of cheating and forgery under sections 420 (cheating), 463 (forgery) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of IPC.
