A local court turned down the bail application of former Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly Speaker Sriniwas Tiwari (89) who was accused of committing irregularities in the recruitment of 17 people in the legislature's secretariat.

Special Sessions Judge Sanjeev Kalgaonkar dismissed Tiwari's application here today stating that the charge against him was of a serious nature due to which it would be improper to give him bail.

Tiwari's counsel told that the court that his client was too old and his long political career was without blemish due to which he should be given bail.

However, the prosecution opposed Tiwari's bail plea stating that it would be improper to grant him bail since the charge against him was of a serious nature.
