A local court today rejected the bail application of a Sub Inspector, accused of gunning down an accused at a police station on October 14 last year.

District Sessions Judge Pon Prakash said the case was an important one and SI Kalidass could not seek bail within a few days after his arrest. Besides as he was a police officer, there was a possibility of threat to the witnesses and destruction of evidence, he said.

Counsel for the SI submitted that his client was arrested on June 16 and was in "illegal" police custody. The case had been investigated and the chargesheet filed. There was no need for more probe and he could be released on bail.

Earlier a CB-CID police team, produced the suspended SI, before Judicial Magistrate N Veluchamy, who remanded him to judicial custody till July 2.

CB-CID police arrested Kalidass and charged him with murdering Syed Mohammed with ulterior motive.

The case was transferred to CB-CID on October 17 last year, three days after the incident. Besides, a judicial magistrate inquiry was also ordered.

Syed Mohammed was brought to the police station in connection with an inquiry for allegedly attempting to stab a man. He was shot dead allegedly by the SI.

CB-CID had earlier submitted that the SI's claim that he had shot the accused dead in self-defence during interrogation at the police station was not sustainable.

The SI was charged with firing three rounds at the chest of the accused, killing him on the spot.
