Court sentences 'Godman' to 10-yr imprisonment

A local court has sentenced a self-styled Godman to 10-year imprisonment for rape and seven-year jail to two others.

Additional District Judge, Balasore, Gangadhar Pati yesterday sentenced 'Godman' Gadadhar Goswami to 10-year rigorous imprisonment after convicting him and imposed a penalty of Rs 15,000.

In case of default, Goswami will have to undergo another one-year jail term.

The court convicted two relatives of the victim, Budhia Sing (40) and Parbati Sing (36), of Chaturikhunta village and ordered 7 years' RI and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on each.

In case of default they will undergo another six months of jail term.
 

Goswami (55), from Baghamundi village under Purulia district in West Bengal, claimed himself to be a Godman and used to visit tribal areas of Nilagiri area in Balasore district.

In one incident in the name of performing some rituals to help a woman bear child, he raped her repeatedly and absconded next morning.

The 'tantrik' convinced the relatives of the woman to leave her alone with him for performing secret puja.

On April 27, 2011, he took her to a nearby forest for performing secret puja and raped her.
