Court sentences MSEDCL employee to 1-year RI for taking bribe

A court here today sentenced a Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) employee to one-year rigorous imprisonment for accepting bribe.

Special Judge M M Walimohammad convicted Vijayan Chanappa Naidu under Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and handed out the punishment.

He also imposed a fine of Rs 500 on Naidu, a storekeeper with the power utility.

Public Prosecutor Hemlata Deshmukh said the MSEDCL wireman Vinayak More, along with the consumer Sandhya Bhatkar, approached the MSEDCL office with a complaint of burning cable.

The accused asked the complainant to give Rs 2,000 for providing cable. A complaint was registered with ACB and the accused was nabbed while accepting the bribe on June 30, 2004, she added.
 

He was also found guilty also under a separate section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and sentenced to six months RI and slapped with a fine of Rs. 500. Both the sentences will run concurrently.
