An Ahmedabad court Tuesday issued summonses to six police officials for their alleged role in a clash with residents of Chharanagar area in July this year.

The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Nasir Sidique summoned the police officials under Section 204 of the CrPC after noting that there was sufficient ground for proceedings against them, and that their act did not appear to be what can be called as done "in discharge of duty."

Summonses were issued to Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP-Zone II) Ashok Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police Shweta Shrimali, Sardarnagar police station inspector R N Virani, sub-inspectors D K Mori and D G Patel, and woman police inspector J G Dhillon.

They were summoned for offences under IPC sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapon), 294-B (using obscene words), 427 (mischief causing damage), 506-2 (criminal intimidation) and 114 (abettor present when offence committed).

A person, named Manoj Tamayche, has filed a complaint against the police officials in the metropolitan court, saying they allegedly attacked residents of Chharanagar under Sardarnagar police station.

Late night on July 27, the accused police officials went on a rampage, beating up locals and vandalising four-wheelers and two-wheelers, the complaint said.

It added that several people, including wife and two sons of the complainant, were injured and 29 persons were arrested after the incident under IPC sections pertaining to deterring a public servant from discharge of duty, among others.

Nothing was recovered by police from the locality in the alleged raid carried out by them, the complainant said.

Police illegally detained them and used obscene words while beating them and damaging vehicles parked there, Tamayche said in the complaint.

Officials of Sardarnagar police station allegedly told the arrested persons that they were brought there after Yadav, who is JCP Zone II, ordered the same, and he as well as DCP Shrimali said asked the police personnel not to register their complaints, Tamayche had told the court.

He had said that the CCTV footage and videos shot on mobile phones caught them being on a rampage, and the same video footage can be sent for forensic examination to check their authenticity.

At the time of incidents, police had claimed that they were attacked by a group of people when they went there to raid illegal liquor dens. A group of people gathered at the spot started pelting police with stones, in which one officer was injured, police said.
