As Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Jain sentenced Delhi resident Munna Sheikh yesterday after convicting him for robbing the Army man's wife and trying to kill him, the 22-year-old youth turned violent and began abusing the judge.

He even picked up a chair in the courtroom and banged it on the floor, said eyewitnesses to the court proceeding adding the court subsequently had to requisition police to contain the violent behaviour of the convict.

The moment the sentence was pronounced, Munna lost his cool and started hurling abuses at the judge and others present in the courtroom, he banged the almirahs and other furniture and could be controlled only after the police force was rushed to the scene, the court sources said.

The prosecution case was that on the day of the incident, complainant Asha Rani and her husband, B Udai Raj, an NSG commando, were on their way to the rest room for army personnel at the New Delhi railway station, as they had to take a train to Tamil Nadu, their native place.

As they were crossing the over bridge near the station, Munna and his accomplices, who could not be arrested, accosted Asha and snatched her gold chain. As Udai came to Asha's rescue, Munna gave him knife blows, injuring him grievously.

"Snatching of belongings of a female finding her alone is quite serious offence, it creates an atmosphere of insecurity among female members of the society.

"Since, complainant and her husband were on their way to further journey and the incident had taken place near the railway station, such incidents to the passengers/tourists not only creates an atmosphere of insecurity among them, but also gives a bad name to the city," the prosecution had argued.
