The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) today issued a notice to Kanpur regional centre to shut 13 tanneries for spreading pollution and violating rules.
"We have received the notice from CPCB to shut 13 tanneries including six from Jajmau and seven from Unnav and other areas," In charge, Regional pollution control board, Mohd Sikander said in a statement.
He said the CPCB officials conducted a raid into the tanneries in May this year during which a lot of irregularities were found. The officials also took samples of raw and final products for lab testing.

"The tanneries did not have common effluent treatment plant (CETP), online monitoring system and cream recovery plant, considering these irregularities, the CPCB has issued a notice to shut these tanneries," he said.
The tanneries were issued a notice earlier as well but they did not react following which the CPCB decided to finally shut them, Sikander said.
"The process to shut the tanneries will begin soon," he added.
