CPI's Puducherry unit today demanded a judicial probe into the recent killing of 20 woodcutters from Tamil Nadu by Andhra Pradesh police.
Describing the killings as 'inhuman massacre', unit Secretary R Viswanathan in a release here said the party's executive committee meeting condemned the gunning down of the workers.
He said the stand of the Andhra Pradesh police that the victims had indulged in "smuggling of red sanders is unacceptable."
Police could have arrested the workers if they were suspected to be smuggling the logs, he said adding the government should order a judicial probe and provide adequate solatium to the bereaved families.
