The party urged the State Election Commission to ensure that 'outsiders' were removed for a peaceful polling.

"There had been threats on our candidates to withdraw candidature and disturbance in our campaigns, and presence of outsiders in the area has created fear of violence", CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose said at a press conference in Haldia in East Midnapore district.

Bose, however, said that despite the threats, no CPI(M) candidate had left the fray "though it is the prime responsibility of the administration and the State Election Commission to ensure a peaceful poll".

Bose said that 46 complaints had been lodged with the police about threats and obstruction on CPI(M) candidates and election campaign by the Trinamool Congress.
